Activity levels across hospital precincts

Examining hotspot data to understand activity levels around hospitals

When we first noticed that hospitals were consistently coming through as major hotspots in our lifestyle data, we thought it was a mistake. Maybe medical devices are leaving digital footprints we haven't cleaned...? Maybe doctors routinely carry numerous mobile phones...? Maybe there's an inexplicable reason GPS syncs occur intensively at hospitals...?

But after thoroughly checking all those explanations, we instead thought about the lived experience of medical precincts. Hospitals operate 24/7, they have a huge number of staff, patients, visitors and contractors who come and go throughout the day and night. These places are genuinely hives of activity, often with thousands of unique users each day.

It's easy to assume that Gold Coast University Hospital shouldn't be as busy as the major retail destination - Australia Fair Shopping Centre. Or that Melbourne CBD would be far busier than The Royal Melbourne Hospital. But you know what they say about assumptions.

Our CEO Jessica Christiansen-Franks shared this analysis in her thought leadership series on Linkedin

When creating great places, it's so important not to rely on your assumptions about how they work. These days there's no excuse for not using data to inform your decisions.
